The AVGUARD.EXE process is a part of AntiVir Real-time Scanner service for Windows NT4/2000/XP from AntiVir antivirus program or Avira Internet Security Suite. This process purposes to scan files for viruses transparently when they are accessed, created, or downloaded (ie. the safest setting) in the background.

Recommendation:

The AVGUARD.EXE process is not an essential file to the computer system. It is a user invoked program and a normal part of PC operations. You can disable it or even remove it from the system startup list in order to save more resources and speed up the system boot.
